Catching up

It's been a very exciting 2 months and I didn't have the time to post any updates. I attended GDC Europe as a volunteer and met some wonderful people during my time at Cologne and had a chance to talk to a lot of people at Gamescom as well. 2 weeks ago I moved to Amsterdam where I am currently working as an Environment Art Intern at Guerrilla Games.

Now for some game art: I recently started working on a portfolio piece. I chose the well I will be using in my large scene to create a vertical slice of the quality of the environment and for some personal practice.

I sculpted the model in zBrush and baked it down with xNormal.

Textures are a mix of zBrush and hand painting in Photoshop.

I am currently still working on the platform the well is standing on and the composition of the whole scene.

I'm making a weapon - Modeling

Modeling of my weapon concept. All modeling done in Maya.

Almost stayed 100% true to my concept. I only had to shift the lower blade area because there wasn't enough space for extrusions which i didn't think of before modeling.

I'm currently at just below 1.6k tris and will probably lower that number a little more before moving on to UVing and texturing.

I'm making a weapon.

First of all it's been a while since I posted and the huge stylized environment project will be finished but as it is a school assignment I am taking a break at the moment. I also will be on an internship for half a year where I can only make so little progress on school projects. So don't expect any major progress.

Also there was this world cup thing which we won!^^

As a short little side project I decided to make a weapon and while gathering reference and doing some concept sketches I decided to make a stylized dagger. I'll post more work in progress here on my blog so I have a little more to post the coming weeks. Here we go:

Curvy dangerous slicing shapes. Testing silhouettes before going into detail.

I preferred the silhouette of the more curved version and made a very quick paintover.

Final concept for my dagger. This is detailed enough for me to start modeling. I expect to make a few more changes during the whole progress but this is a good starting point.

I'll start modeling this in a few days and hope to share more progress very soon.

Milestone

I am wrapping the first half of the project up this week and made a fly through video to show some parts of my level. Taking a little brake now and will pick this back up soon :) Can't wait to get this done.

Polish #1

As I have to deliver the blockout next week I am taking the rest of the time to polish and clean up the whole scene. Pretty pleased with the "end"(/halfway-through) result. Trying to have another update before delivery.
